Psychiatric Visit In Tanjung Rambutan

Was my moody state yesterday due to the psychiatric visit? I don't really know...

Yesterday we had an visit to Tanjung Rambutan Hospital where it houses and gives treatment to those under psychiatric care and for those who have mental stressed problem. It was an official visit to this hospital and upon arriving, we were given a short talk by one psychiatrist lady named Dr. Cheah and Dr. Razali. Both are specialists dealing with mental and stress problems...

After the briefing, we were taken around the hospital which covers 503 acres... imagine... it is like a town on its own inside. There are around 1700 men patients and 900 ladies patients from all over Malaysia. One of us asked why men patients are more than ladies... and Dr Cheah told us that actual fact, the men and ladies have almost the same ratio... The figure difference is due to the older men who are the bread winners from those days during the 1940s..1950s...

this hospital has been existing since 1911

503 acres is a very big area
one might get lost if there is no signage...

apartments for some patients who prefer privacy
and who works on the farm .. priority is given to them

the farm ward

the men's wards

we were given another briefing
when we visited the wards

orchids planted by the inmates
are for sale...

the 2 rooms apartments..

ladies' ward... very clean and well kept..

the hospital muzium
not supposed to take.. guard coming now..

my colleague and YT..

the bus that took us around...
we were not allowed to take photos of the patients
only of the sceneries

It was an eye-opener for me.. but was the cause for my moodiness been affected by this visit?

  3. people always discriminate mental patience. Only if they are related to one of them will they understand the torture this people are going through. Someone I know has such a problem and it is good Claire, that you are able to see it up close. At least now, you know what their lives are all about.

Rachel, tanjung rambutan is the largest hospital in Malaysia, a home for the depressed, mentally disturbed people..

Merryn, yes, when i saw the ladies being warded there, it is kind of sad.. to them, they are like in another world of their own...

  5. Claire, visiting this place is really good because it serves as a reflection about life...their life and ours. Hoping you are okay and holding on. Smile even though the world is aching :-)

  9. Hope that you are alright with the recent incident (you mentioned in your reply) that happened. Cheer up and be positive ya! Remember you always have your family and frens that cares....and since you are believe in God, then God will bless you too.

I have visited Taman Sinar Harapan, Kuala Kubu Baru (A recent report published in Star about the mismanagement and abuse of residents at the shelters.) many2 years ago.
Me and my club member even had the opp to helped them for eg, feeding, bathing and washing some of their clothes.
It was a really good experience for me. I have learned to love and appreciate those we care.

  10. yes Amy, no regrets going.. a real eye opener, only feel sad about the patients and ownself..

Keats & Mery, yes..very vast land 503 acres, like a small city inside..

Cath J, it is clean too..like a peaceful surrounding for them, a world on their own..

Weng, the trip was organized by a govt association...

Yes, Sarah, those who work in these type of places also must be dedicated in their work for the patients.. when i see them treat the patients, they have to blend themselves in their world... treat them with tender care...

  14. People always talk about the place like it's a horrible place. It actually looks very nice... In this present day and age, people must learn to relax, count their blessings, cherish life and take care of their mental health...plus their spiritual health, not just the physical!

  15. wah....hospital bahagia...happy hospital...seems qite nice and clean leh...thought it will be a messy place ler...and lots of crazy people there...

  16. I was equally surprised too.. the govt has taken initiative to make this place a happier and safer place for these less fortunates... some inmates can actually go in and out of this place.. some have their own freedom and they can come back to their apartment ...

  18. must be an eye-opener for you. the inmates sometimes look dazed partly because they are on psychiatric medication, so often you don't know if they're unwell or if it's because of the treatment.
