Reanaclaire Cooks - A Hakka Dish!

My sister told me to bring one dish over for dinner yesterday.... I was at my wits end... what should I cook for them?  What type of dish that they have not tasted before... and the first thing that came to my mind was a Hakka dish!

I am sure my mom and sister have not cook a Hakka dish before... we are Teochews.. but my in-laws are Hakkas.... and after all these 20 over years being married to a Hakka family, one or two dishes I can be able to come up with, right?  (mmm tor mmm siew) hahahahaa....

Ok, here is my simplified Hakka dish.... 
*hope I didn't murder the dish!*
Stewed Pork Ribs With Radish
Chopped garlic, two tomatoes and two radish cut up like this...
300gms of pork ribs, washed and blanched with hot water before cooking...
(Can replace with pork knuckles)
*take away porky smell*
Here are the ingredients needed...
Sour plum sauce and chilli sauce too...
As usual, sauteed the garlic first... then add in the radish and tomatoes...
Add in the pork ribs....
Add in some water.... and let it stewed for around 15 to 20 minutes low fire....
Cook till radish are soft....
Prepare the sauce meanwhile....
Plum sauce, chilli sauce, cornflour, sugar....
Add the sauce in and let it simmer....
Made a mistake... 
I added in too much water....
But never mind... next time I will put in less...
I left the dish in the kuali for an hour or so... 
Let the sauce marinate into the meat....
And when it was time for dinner, I heat it up again....
So how did my Hakka dish turn out?
My sister and nephew gave a Thumbs UP!
My nephew asked me, "Ah Yee, how long did you take to master this?" 
*So naughty of him!*
My sister said the sauce is very appetizing...
But I left out an important ingredient....
Dried Chillies!!
And the sauce should not be so watery...
Well, I guess I have to do a number of times more...

  1. I didnt know this is a Hakka dish. I am a Hakka and I never saw my mum cook this before. I thought pork belly with yam is a Hakka dish. Hehe.

  4. If I cook this, I will be even more simplified and totally destroy the dish. I will skip the garlic and cornflour because I don't have them and won't buy them for the sake of 1 dish, and I also don't have plum sauce so I will just replace with oyster sauce. It will be Gunners Pork Ribs instead of Hakka Pork Ribs >.<

  10. I never know this is Hakka dish. Will ask my hub cos he is a Hakka, maybe he has eaten before. Agree with your sis, the sauce is appetizing, nice to go with white rice.

    1. Yes, plum sauce and chilli sauce.. yes, ask your hubby cos my parents-in-law always cook this for CNY... but of course with pork knuckles not pork ribs.. :)

  11. Very nice. These days, I don't fry the stuff in oil first, nicer to fry of course...but less oil is good, enough in the meat already.

  12. Looks very hoiwai.. My inlaws are hakka too but I've never eaten this from mil.. She is always cooking braised fatty pork with egg only.. hehe.. Ingredients look simple.. Instructions too.. I think can do and follow.. Will bookmark this recipe..

  14. hey!! i am Teochew too!! we are ka-gi-nang lah, hahaha.. wow, so rarely this Claire cooks and somemore Hakka dish, haha, since i am not a Hakka so i would assume you cooked something Hakka lor.. hmmm, plum sauce boy, that is surely very appetising.. i can imagine the radish absorbing all the essence of the gravy, wow~~

    2. Never heard of this Hakka rap before meh? Ask any Hakka lau or Hakka moi they should know though could be different version. Try and see!
