Reanaclaire Cooks - Fish Maw Soup And Three Dishes

Before my girl left for college, I managed to cook ONE proper meal for her ... after this, the kuali will be hung up again for some time before I take it out again....
I bought some "Far Gau" aka Fish Maw
For this 100gm, it cost RM68 in one wholesale shop in old town, Ipoh....
I am quite confused actually...
One type of fish maw is rough .. (Yu Pew)
and one is smooth like the above picture... (Fa Gau)
But both of them have the same name... Fish Maw?
Read that fish maw can make lungs and kidneys stronger and to moisten joints..
Rich in collagen and proteins.....
I soaked 4 pieces for six hours
and  then boiled with "village chicken" for two hours plus...
Put in some red dates and wolfberries to enhance the flavour...

My girl loves salmon.... so I just pan-fried for a short while using non stick pan...
Salmon has natural oil so not necessary to put in cooking oil....
 Spinach with garlic....
Cucumber cut into pieces and eaten with....
Sambal Dried Shrimps....
I love eating cucumber with the sambal... Shiok!!
My mom complained of shoulder pain...
Hope this collagen can relieve her pain....
My Once-A-Blue-Moon Complete Meal....

    1. Quite cheap that piece of salmon... Normally go during Saturday mornings in Jaya Jusco, can get them fresh...

  3. Yu Piew is fish maw.
Fa Kau is the swim bladder of fish, which contains more muscle thus has extra elasticity.

    1. Oh, so this is the difference! I googled the difference but both are also named fish maw.. that confused me... but in English, both are still called fish maw?

    2. I think the English label wrongly.

    3. I checked the dictionary fish maw is the swim bladder. So Pam says yu piew is fish maw so yu piew is also the swim bladder?

    4. All along I thought fish maw is the yu piew (fish stomach).. I didnt know fa kau (swim bladder) is also called fish maw... ok, to differentiate it, one is called fish stomach and one is called fish bladder.. the one that I boil is fish bladder which is more expensive than fish stomach.. :)

  4. wah.. the Ipoh Food Mayor cooks again!! NICE!! besides a complete meal, i also think this is a very nutritious and wholesome meal lah.. i love fish maw and your soup is definitely very loaded, very "bou" lah.. and clever of you, raw cucumber to go with the meal, that would be refreshing, and surely appetising with the sambal together~~

  9. The fish maw maybe from different type of fish - that's why one rough one smooth? actually I am guessing only. I don't know much about fish maw.

    1. Oh, I am also trying to get the difference.. fish maw has two types.. one rough..(stomach?) and one smooth (bladder) as explained by Pam above.. :)

    1. Oh, play play never mind... the sambal was actually given by my colleague! hahahaha... That one needs lots of pounding and ingredients.. so normally my colleague will give me a small jar when she does this sambal... so nice of her!

  18. Claire, you are such a great cook, but I think you hate cooking? I cannot cook more than two things at once. We eat salmon at least three times a week. I poach it with broth, dill weed, and lemon.
