Teochew Nang Porridge

I am a Teochew by name only cos I don't speak this dialect. I don't speak because I don't know how to.... lol... Actually I am half teochew half cantonese... so naturally follow my mother's tongue. But where food is concerned, we were taught how to eat teochew's signature dishes... Don't ask me the names of the dishes but one of them is ..... PORRIDGE!

We love porridge, I mean my siblings and my parents as well... from young, my mum love to boil porridge (also due to the fact, we were quite poor those days, rice was considered a luxury!) and she used to boil them with sweet potatoes too... nowadays we don't cook that anymore, in fact nowadays porridge is more costly than rice!

Here was what Elin and I had for our lunch....

steamed minced meat with salted vegetable..

cooked fish (sook yue)

assorted vegetables (chap choy)
I love this dish..

sweet potato porridge...

overall here .. it cost around RM12.00 for 2 persons
STP, this is not cheap, right?
better to boil our own porridge..
eat with ikan bilis, salted eggs, fermented beancurd
BEST!!

  3. Hey, me too a half teow chew, father a teow chew, mom a cantonese too..and I don't speak the dialect too. LOL..

When we were young, my mom too loved to cook plain porridge with fried fish and salted eggs as condiments.. Those were the days. My boy cried when I cooked him this as the porridge looked so plain that made me felt like the step mom ill treating her stepson. *bleh*

  4. Bananaz would like to seek clarification from the foodie experts as I got confused. Have been eating teow chew porridge very often. There are two kinds right? One being the normal teow chew moi (Bananaz not a teow chew nang, ka ch'ing bo ang) with big grainy type and the other in Cantonese called 'choke' where it being cooked till like Ming Na said smooth and creamy usually with fish, chicken or frog legs etc? Or both 'moi' and 'choke' are the same? Which is which and what is what? Whether teow chew or easy to chew, I will always lup chew ~;).

  12. I must say the sweet potato porrige looks rather nice! Around here, porrige is associated with poverty and orphanages. Because of Oliver Twist eating only porrige in the orphanage and getting in trouble for asking for seconds!

  21. I see the picture, knowing the price you paid,i would think it is expensive lah... but then again if it reminds you of the young days then it is worth every penny of it, right?

Moi,actually is or sorry was a poor man's dish in the old days, a little rice used mixed with water, and some sweet potatoes,(back then potatoes were cheap too)

you should try my wife's moi, simple and yet very nice, hotel standard lol,, dont joke dont lying, hahahahah

  24. RM12 per person? Aiyor...and I thought my RM10++ was expensive - at least mine was in a classy hotel restaurant. LOL!!!

  25. I so agree with you...teochew porridge is not cheap if you eat it outside. I used to love porridge a lot but somehow it doesn't fill me up for long anymore...so I hardly take porridge these days unless I go for dim sum and I must order "pei tan sau yuk chuk"!
