Takeaway Giant Bun Curry Prawns From Soo Har Yee Restaurant, Ipoh

ON ANOTHER LAZY EVENING, we ordered food again, this time from Beggar's Restaurant aka Soo Har Yee, direct translation.

This restaurant is famous for the Beggar's chicken (made from herbs) but I did not order that.  Another signature dish is their Curry Bread.  There are three options we can choose from, the fillings can be either curry chicken, sweet sour prawns or crabs.  We chose prawns and besides this dish, we ordered another two more.... dishes which I could not cook at home, of course... LOL...

The food were delivered by the restaurant staff, not by Grab or Foodpanda and no delivery charges since the cost came to around RM116.  This was our dinner on that rainy evening....

I was surprised to see the big bun in a big nice box....
The bun was still warm and soft...
Upon opening....
I am not a good food blogger....
When we started "tearing" up the bun, I forgot to take pictures of the fillings!
That should be the most important part, right?
Compared to the two other dishes, doesn't the bun look giantic?
Braised yam with pork... RM25
This is salted egg chicken..... RM10 I think....
There are 11 big prawns inside the Big Bun... RM76
I think it is really worth ordering... LOL...
We finished the whole bun except for the bottom layer...
Cos we had white rice too....
Well, it was certainly a Big Dinner for us...
We thought of ordering this Giant Bun once again...
Maybe the next time with crabs...
I make sure that I will get my camera ready!!

Takeaway Dishes From Sun Marpoh Restaurant, Ipoh

LAZY DAY... and I ended up calling the restaurant to prepare three dishes for dinner.  Just a short drive away, I ordered from Sun Marpoh restaurant, it is a family-like place, not the posh kind of restaurant and we have been regulars here ever since my first kid was born!  That means the restaurant has been around for at least 30 years, I think... LOL...

Slowly as the years go by, the restaurant flourished until we do not feel like going there anymore cos we do not like waiting.  But since the Covid-19, with the MCO, CMCO and all the orders, everyone prefer to eat at home or go online delivery.  Many restaurants and eating stalls are naturally affected, business is not as good anymore.  The best and crowded restaurants are now turning quiet... however, we can still "help" them by ordering food for takeaway.

It has been some time since we last ate fish so I ordered dishes which I could not cook in the house.

Nestum chicken.... RM17
We miss this family dish...
Kids' dish, I would say...
LOL...
My son's favourite....RM9
Eggplant with minced meat....
I requested for basil leaves too..
Unfortunately they did not have.....
Steamed fish in sweet sour sauce.... RM30
I only did the ABC soup....
The rest including the rice was bought from the restaurant....
Their herbal soup is on the house...
Whole cost came to RM57.50....
I think that is pretty reasonable... right?

Claypot Prawns Noodles At Koptiam 100, Ipoh

MORNING AND EVENING...  I normally take two meals per day, I mean two main meals and in between, I do snack a bit of this and that.

Before the CMCO, my neighbour took us to a coffeeshop in Ipoh Garden East, called 100... he recommended us to take this claypot noodles with 4 big prawns, he told us that it is the best ever!  LOL... And that was exactly what I ordered when we reached there...

In a claypot they served with glass noodles...
Priced at RM12...
I think that is pretty reasonable...
Taste:  Would be tastier if they add in more chinese wine!
I did not finish these by myself...
Sharing is always a better option...
Both of these cost RM18 in total..
I would love to go back to this shop again for other food...
Just have to wait for the CMCO to be over...
When we were coming out, we saw the shop owner..
Even her car bears the number 100...
I wonder how much she paid for this car number...
Must be pretty high!

Our Dinner At Sun Lee How Fook Before CMCO Started In Ipoh

OUR LAST DINNER BEFORE CMCO...

I remember we went out on a Sunday before the Conditional Movement Control Order began on Monday.  I suggested going out for dinner cos I know that once CMCO starts, we would not be able to be so "free" to go out.  We went to Sun Lee How Fook restaurant to have a nice dinner and ended up ordering this set dinner for four at RM98 nett.

Steamed fish slices in ginger sauce...
Pork in chinese wine....
Fried spring chicken....
Mushroom with shrimps....
Greens with clams...
Plus rice and drinks, it is set at RM98...
For desserts, they served watermelon....
And we ordered this separately... Lotus pancake....
I think it is around RM15...
After this dinner, I guess we have to wait for the CMCO to be lifted...
From the MySejahtera updates, I don't think the lift will be soon....
We would still be under this restricted movement for some time....
Stay safe!

A Guide To The Essential Types of Cookware and Cooking Utensils

Has your kitchen finally been fitted? Besides the new kitchen appliances and cabinets, you are also expected to select the right cookware and cooking utensils. These kitchen tools are of the utmost importance for preparing mouth-watering meals that require frying, boiling, sautéing, searing, or chopping ingredients.

Nowadays, there is a vast assortment of gadgets for your kitchen, available in various sizes, forms, and materials. Some utensils are designed for the purpose of cutting different ingredients, whereas others are better suited for peeling, grating, or serving food.

We hope this guide introduces you to the essential types of cookware and cooking utensils.

Cookware

Every household is supposed to be equipped with the most crucial cookware elements in order for family members to prepare meals that require all sorts of cooking methods. For instance, homeowners are expected to have the right cookware for frying, searing, sautéing, baking, roasting, stewing, etc. Even if you are not fond of cooking, there are certain kitchen elements novice cooks need to prepare the most basic meals.

A non-stick frying pan is the most versatile cookware element, not only used for frying but sautéing, searing, scrambling, and making sauces. This type of pan is irreplaceable when it comes to preparing pancakes or omelets since the ingredients for these meals are known for sticking to the surface of pans. Therefore, make sure you purchase either a model made from stainless steel or anodized aluminum so as to keep food from sticking.

Moreover, a saucepan is another important utensil whose wide bottom provides excellent heat conductivity. Saucepans are used for simmering sauces, boiling pasta, and cooking vegetables at low temperatures. In case you aren’t keen on slow cooking, invest in a model with a lid to accelerate the process.

A stockpot is a perfect utensil for preparing soups and stew in larger quantities. Apart from food, this cookware element is also used for making pasta, as well as cooking seafood and vegetables. Individuals looking for such a pot in smaller dimensions are advised to purchase a saucepot, which serves the same purpose but differs in size.

Furthermore, a roasting pan is necessary for cooking large pieces of meat and poultry, like chicken, goose, or turkey. You can either purchase a shallow or a large-size roasting pan, depending on the meat quantity you intend to roast. Go to this page to check out some practical tips for roasting a turkey.

In terms of bakeware, a food cake pan is essential for adorers of Bundt cakes, specific for their hollow core. It’s paramount for the surface of cake pans to be non-stick, as it’s the only way for the cake to rise adequately. Conversely, you can purchase a bread loaf pan that bakes both bread and cake at low temperatures.

A sheet pan is the right bakeware element for baking rolls, cookies, and other sorts of dry food. Additionally, muffin lovers are encouraged to invest in a muffin pan, whose volume varies from at least six cups to a maximum of forty-eight cups. There is a variety of models in different cup sizes, designed for preparing small, regular, and large-sized muffins.

Cutting utensils

Prior to preparing any kind of meal, most of the ingredients are supposed to be chopped or sliced properly, which is why every household needs a variety of cutting utensils. The bread knife, as the name implies, is used for cutting bread fast. Its blade has to be solid and sufficiently sharp in order not to squish the bread.

In contrast, the paring knife is known for its small-sized blade, hence used for cutting delicate food pieces, such as fruit. However, in order to cut large pieces of roasted meat, make sure you purchase a serrated knife. Unlike the bread knife, this model is designed with a large blade to cut meat effectively.

Furthermore, the only way to have your kitchen knives sharp at all times is by using a knife sharpener, referring to a metal rod designed to sharpen blades. Also, kitchen scissors are another helpful cutting utensil, specially designed for cutting bones that are impossible to cut with other types of knives.

Ultimately, when cutting food, one is always advised to use a cutting board in order to protect the kitchen surfaces from damage. Keep in mind that wooden boards are more susceptible to bacteria, as these are known to absorb the juices produced by food during the cutting process. Conversely, plastic cutting boards are non-absorbent and low-maintenance.

Ladles and spoons

Ladles and kitchen spoons are indispensable when it comes to stirring food. These utensils are available in a variety of types and sizes, each of them beneficial for performing different tasks. For instance, the soup ladle is specific for its curved shape and long handle, helping people transfer the soup from a stockpot to a bowl.

The spatula, on the other hand, has a flat shape that helps individuals flip or pick up ingredients in the course of frying. Since spatulas are available in multiple sizes, make sure you purchase a model whose size is adapted to that of your frying pan.

Additionally, pasta ladles are characteristic for their design, having teeth on one side of the ladle and a hole in the center. The teeth are helpful for picking pasta up from the pot, whereas the hole is vital for draining the water. Conversely, the standard kitchen spoon resembles a normal spoon; only this one is much larger in size. Such a spoon is indispensable for maneuvering food in both pots and pans.

Other utensils

Apart from the above-mentioned kitchen utensils, there is a myriad of other devices that facilitate the cooking process. For example, the measuring cups are incredibly useful for baking, while the whisk is the right tool for mixing ingredients. Graters, peelers, and tongs are also necessary for the preparation of every meal.

Final word

No kitchen is fully equipped without the right tools.

Choose those that make cooking fun!

Pizza From Michelangelo, Ipoh

EAST AND WEST.... two dinners on two different days.

Young man asked for Pizza again, this time not homemade ones but from the real Pizza shop called Michelangelo.  Used to be packed with patrons when they first opened a number of years ago, at least 6-7 years back.  Then in the recent years, Ipoh cafes started to increase numbers and they kind of affected this Pizza restaurant.  During MCO, it was closed and only reopened last week.  Young man wanted Dominoes and aunty here wanted Michelangelo... and of course, the payer decides....
I ordered Half and Half...
Two different types of pizza...
but more or less the same....
He likes bacon with eggs....
And I had sweet and salty bacon...
But how much can I eat...
I just had two pieces for dinner... and I'm good...
And the rest of the pizza?
All went into his endless tummy!

Farewell Lunch At Pusing Mun Choong Restaurant Ipoh

FAREWELL TO WORK AND WELCOME TO RETIRING....

One of my ex-colleagues have reached the maximum retirement age last month, she bade goodbye to those who are working and on the other hand, we retirees welcomed her to our senior club!  LOL...  I retired at the age of 55 (though I had not reached 55 then) and I have not miss a single day of not working.  What I miss is the breakfast moments I had with my former colleagues Other than that, I do not miss a single thing in the office except for the humans and the food.  LOL...

This time round, we arranged to have the Farewell lunch for our loyal working friend at Mun Choong Public Restaurant in town.  One of the most prestigious restaurants at all times, the place was fully packed and we had to shout on top of our voices to be heard.  It is definitely not a good place for us ladies for our next gathering.  For our next gathering, we need a more quieter place so that the crowd won't be able to drown our voices... LOL...
Our lunch started off with this appetizer...
Iced crystal greens with roasted sesame sauce....
Crispy pork knuckle with mantou dumplings and sauce....
Very crispy indeed...
Crispy fried cod fish...
Yes, a good choice to order!
Steamed chicken with lots of ginger....
Kailan with yam....
Steamed stuffed beancurd...
Another good choice from this restaurant...
Alright... that is about all.....
The lunch cost around RM450...
And lots of pictures from the working and retirees....
Yes, we are looking forward to another gathering soon!!

Special Dishes At Chuen Kah Fook Restaurant, Menglembu

BACK IN IPOH...

I am so grateful to have a group of friends who love to go for food-adventure, just like me!  We love eating though we could not eat a lot like in our younger working days.  During our working days, we could not go without rice even for a day, big portion some more.  But ever since we retired, we now only shared a small portion of rice!  Yes, one small bowl of rice shared among two of us... sometimes I take only a spoonful and at times, no rice at all... that is how I eat now.  :)  Oh, I forgot to mention, that is usually for dinner... during the day, I eat a bigger portion... now I understand why the saying goes like this...

Morning time...  eat like a King...
Night time... eat like a pauper....
(Only when it comes to rice.... )

For this dinner, we went to Chuen Kah Fook in Menglembu, first time visit for me, thanks to my foodie friends, they introduced this restaurant to me and I went for the second time after that....
We had their special signature dish...
Steamed fish with lots of ginger and black bean sauce....
Claypot chicken with pig stomach...
Something very different and very tasty!
Can just eat this without any rice....
And claypot water cress noodles..
Steaming hot when served... s
Our three dish dinner.....
And the "packed" restaurant....
Grinning happily here is my friend...
Thanks for bringing us here!

Our Yearly Affair At Delights Restaurant, Ipoh

SAU KOONG CHAU...... literally known as "Close Shop" or "Stop Work" is our annual affair when the festive season Chinese New Year is coming near.  My ex-colleagues whom we know for umpteen years already, make it a point to have a gathering meet-up and have a good session of food before we  usher in the Chinese Lunar Year 2019.

This year again, we have our Friday long hours lunch at Delight Restaurant, a nice place for us, less crowded and less noise so that we don't have to raise our voices in our table of 10.  There is a new face this year in our group, she just joined in the government service few months ago, the youngest gal among us all.  It was a very fun and interesting afternoon, most of the time we focused on the new young staff.... a very witty and hardworking lady who works from early morning till midnight... Knowing her, each of us feel kind of blessed in our own way... LOL...
The pensioners being the early birds...
Back to our menu.... this is a set meal which cost RM668...
As usual, this is a Must for every set during this festive season of the year...
After the furnishings, it become like this...
Then the Big Toss with good wishes in the air...
Chicken Herbal Soup with lots of goodness inside...
I drank three bowls of this... good for my age... LOL..
Steamed Giant Fish..
Mixed Vege..
Needs no introduction...
Crispy Fried Pork Knuckle...
And lastly, the Lap Mei Farn...
And the "celebrities"....
