Homemade Roselle Jam

As I was taking my furry member for an evening walk last week, I stopped to talk to a lady who was doing some gardening just right outside her corner house. I don't know her well but we always smile and nod when we see each other. She was holding a cangkul and digging into the soil and I asked her what she was going to plant.  She told me that she is planting Roselle...

Oh, I only heard of Roselle cakes recently.... and I didn't know how the plant looks like until I saw one plant just outside her house.  She told me she was going to plant a few more trees because her rosellejam business is doing quite well.  At the moment, she only have one roselle plant and that is why she wanted to plant more so that she can do more jam and sell them......

Feeling curious, I also made an order, I wanted to try how the jam tastes like.... the very next day, I saw her waiting for me at her gate... she waved me over and passed the small tub of jam to me... it cost only RM5....
I took it to the office the very next day...
She told me to finish it fast because it is free from preservatives....
I "sapu-ed" the roselle jam on five pieces of Jacobs....
*Another two pieces were already in my stomach!*
The next day I tried the jam on four pieces of bread....
See.... my jam was almost finished!

So how was the taste?
The Rosella jam was not as sweet as those sold on the shelves..
Maybe that was the reason why I managed to eat more than I usually do!

  1. Maybe you should plant some too, to give the auntie some competition. Just make sure you don't eat all that you planted :D

  6. Roselle's good for health, lots of vitamins. Not too sure about the jam though - usually they drink the juice.

  9. Back in the early 80's when I was in school, a neighbour introduced us to Roselle drink. Back then, they used to call it Ribena plant because the Roselle drink looks like Ribena. I can't remember the taste. I don't mind planting Roselle but only for the pretty flowers. I don't think I want to eat it ha..ha...

  13. When I was young, there was a Roselle plant in my house so we just made drinks from boiling the flowers. I wouldn't say that it tastes like Ribena. It is more sourish. Is your jam a bit little bit sourish?
