Steamed Lemongrass Chicken And Sambar With Vegetables

STARTED OFF MY DAY HAVING BREAKFAST IN TOWN... and the rest of the afternoon was spent at home eating tidbits.  Towards evening, I was feeling very hungry and yearning for a proper meal.  Did not feel like eating out again instead I was yearning for some homecooked food...  It has been some time since I cook, right?

Remember I bought a "village" chicken last Sunday, took two drumsticks to defroze.  After rummaging through the fridge, there is only cabbage, two tomatoes, one potato and lemongrass.  Hmmm... what shall I do with them.... Oh, suddenly I remember I have a bottle of Sambar!

Ok, let me google what Sambar is.... cos I saw the name Sambar written at the bottle...

Sambar powder is a flavorful South Indian style coarse textured spices powder prepared by grinding various type of basic Indian spices such as coriander seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, black peppercorns, dry red chilies, fenugreek seeds, cinnamon, dry coconut with chana dal.

This bottle of spices is given by my friend..
She makes it very easy for me...
She is so meticulous...
Knowing me, she wrote the method step by step!
Thank you so much, Bawani!!
And step by step, I managed to cook one big bowl of Sambar...
Consisting of cabbage, potato and tomatoes....
I added a bit of lemon in it.. and the turnout was ....
So appetitizing that I ate and drank it all....
And with the two drumsticks, I cut into small pieces, marinated them for an hour
Put some chopped garlic, lemongrass and some red dates on top....
And steamed it on the wok....
By 5pm, my dinner was ready to be served with steamed rice....
I thought I wouldn't be able to finish...
But I did!
Two bowls of Sambar with vege and Two drumsticks...
Oh well....
I guess I am not a Small Eater after all....
hahahahaa..

  1. Was the sambar powder made by your friend? I have not tried it before. It must be delicious since you walloped two bowls of sambar. I find your chicken dish interesting - I wonder how lemongrass pairs with red dates. Again, must be very good since you finished the whole lot!

  7. Your steamed chicken looks similar to mine, not the same, just similar. I wish I could try that sambar - never had the chance to try out any Indian spices...other than curry powder. :(

  8. By finishing this big meal all by yourself, you are now officially in the same league as PH! Hehehehe! I didn't know that the Sambar spice is used to make vegetable soup. I would love that soup since it is full of vegetable goodness.

  9. I will follow your idea of steaming the chicken but without the skin. Satisfying home cooking though need to put in effort.
