City Walk Around Oxford

BREAKFAST WAS PROVIDED AT THE GUEST HOUSE but we have to take it before 9am.  We went down around 8 to take our ration and then we resumed our "rest" in bed after that.  Lol... Then we took our sweet time before heading down to Oxford city centre.  That is why I love free n easy tours.. No more waking up early and rushing to off before our eyes are even opened... Lol...

The walk was like a twenty minutes walk to half hour depending on the number of stops we had ... As usual, along the way we stopped to take pictures and most of them are ancient structural church-like buildings.  They are actually colleges or universities or faculities as my son mentioned.  I did some research online and briefly it says....

As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris.  From 1878, academic halls were established for women and they were admitted to full membership of the University in 1920. Five all-male colleges first admitted women in 1974 and, since then, all colleges have changed their statutes to admit both women and men. St Hilda's College, which was originally for women only, was the last of Oxford's single sex colleges. It has admitted both men and women since 2008.  During the 20th and early 21st centuries, Oxford added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as an international focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate.
As we walked towards the city centre....

Along Cornmarket Street....
Another college....

Waiting to cross over.....
Somewhere in town....
Christchurch....
Cornmarket Street where pedestrians can walk and shop along....
Magdalene Street....
Some college along the way....
I remember this....
And this cos we went in to visit... Free entrance, of course....
And I also remember this cos I asked for it.....
Nando for our lunch!  £19.95 to replenish our strength to continue walking.. and walking.....

  1. Where are the bicycles? When I was there a long long time ago, there were lots of bicycles - undergrads cycling here and there for their lectures.

  4. Do take a look at the fringe theatres. I have seen excellent shows in fringe theatres and at a wallet-friendly price.

Some popular shows in Central London go on a tour and put on a show for one or two nights or a very limited season in major towns and cities. Worth looking out for.

  7. I prefer Free & Easy, can go where you want, stay as long as you want, not like with guided tour, have to rush here, here and there...
