Plants And Kiwi Cherries

FALL IS HERE... sometimes it is cold till I have to wear long sleeves and pants, but today is sunny.  I am still surviving with short sleeves and shorts at this moment.  LOL....

We have a very small mini size area and the soil is very fertile.  During the summer, they were very productive, I mean the plants, not the humans.  :)  Every now and then, these need to be plucked, I like the cherry tomatoes, they are very sweet even when eaten raw.  Oh, I forgot to take the cilipadi pictures, too bad... they are pretty dried up by now.  Buying cilipadi (hot chillies) in the malls is not cheap and during this season, we have to pluck them and put them in the freezer.  The plants will go into "hibernation" during the cold season.....

Sometimes I eat them raw and most times, I just add to the vegetables I cook....
For flavor.... LOL...
Capsicum and they come in odd shapes....
See..... short and stubby.....
Butt shape too!
This one is most normal.....
Oh, we did not plant these.....
They are Kiwi Cherries....
I think they are seasonal....
Very small kiwis like grapes....
Taste nice and sweet....
First time eating them and they don't come in cheap...
For a packet of less than 20, it cost around $3.99
The next time we went, they were not sold anymore....

My One And Only Edible Greens

MY DAILY HARVEST.... almost daily, I can get two or three okra from my 7 pots.  At least one can be plucked if not a few.  Thanks to my green thumb friend who provides me with the okra seeds and to my neighbour who planted them in his pots.  As for me, I only do the fertilizing and watering at times.... and of course, the inspection and harvesting.  LOL....

The process of getting these okra is considered fast, in less than a month, the fruits are reaped.  I like seeing the flowers sprouting out and after that, the okras will appear.  I do not have a grassy garden, if I do, I surely will plant more edible greens.  When this lockdown is over, I will visit the nursery to get the necessary but before that, I must go consult my "Sifu" on how and what to plant!  LOL...

Full blown flower and okras sprouting out from this plant....
These are stubby okras...
Crunchy and nice at this length....
Wait any longer, they will become too hard and tough to be eaten...

And recently my friend gave me the seeds
to this Red Okra....
Red when uncooked...
Turned green when cooked...
Now only I know!
Enough for me....
Sometimes I just steam them...
and at times stir fry with dried shrimps....
Accumulated batch.....
These went into my fish curry on that day....
Yes, I am an "Okra Woman" .....
LOL...

Why Gardening Should Be Part of Your Self-Care Routine

When it comes to self-care, gardening might not be the first thing you think of, unless you’re already an avid gardener, in which case you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. But, it is fair to say that gardening can be one of the best ways to boost your wellness that there is.

Think about it, gardening takes you outdoors and enables you to spend some peaceful time amongst beautiful, fragrant plants and flowers. It will also give you at least a light workout if you are doing it right, and we all know how good exercise is for our body and mind health right?

Gardening can also give you a great sense of accomplishment. When you’ve planted something from seed and nurtured it to fruition, and maybe even incorporated it into a healthy meal for the whole family to enjoy, there is no feeling quite like it. It’s a real self-esteem booster, and lord knows we all need a boost to our self-esteem from time to time don’t we? That’s why you should think about adding gardening to your self-care routine.

But it’s not just that, gardening has so many health benefits that we could sit here talking about them all day. We aren’t going to do that, we don’t need to because this infographic goes into detail about every single health and wellness benefit of gardening, all of which have been proven by extensive research. If you don’t want to take up gardening after reading this, then you aren’t serious bout self-care!

Tips To Help Maintain Your Outdoor Space

Maintaining your outdoor space when it comes to your home is something you always want to pay attention to. It’s one area of the home that can often be neglected but should, in fact, a space that’s used quite often throughout the year. With that in mind, here are some tips to maintain your outdoor space.

Get Fuss-Free Materials & Greenery

Firstly, make sure you are picking things for the outdoor space that are going to be manageable. You don’t want to get plants or greenery that are going to take a lot of work to upkeep because you might not have time to do this. The same goes for materials like outdoor furniture. Even though some furniture might look nice with a metal finish, the upkeep to stop them from rusting might be a bit too much and it might end up getting ruined by forgetting to cover them up or store them away.

Find things that are going to be easy for you to deal with and this can change from person to person. You may be someone who loves their garden and spending time pruning it. There’s also so much out there to pick from, that you’re not going to have a hard time finding things anyway.

Go Artificial

It’s good to consider your options when it comes to what you include in your outdoor space, particularly when it comes to things like grass and other natural materials. However, you may want to consider going artificial, especially as the upkeep of making the grass look good is quite difficult. Depending on where you live and how you treat it, can dictate just how green your grass will be. So with that being said, if you fancy not having the hassle of mowing the lawn, then you definitely want to think about getting artificial grass instead. It also means that if you have any kids or pets, they’re not bringing in half of the garden with them on their feet or shoes.

Get Professionals In For Big Jobs

There are some big jobs when it comes to maintaining your outdoor space that is bigger than you can take on alone. Things like tree surgery and cutting down big trees will likely need someone like Sydney Tree Company to step in and take the lead. It’s best to get the professionals in so that everything is done correctly and won’t be harmful for you or your household to try and do yourselves.

Declutter The Space

And finally, make sure that you treat your outdoor space like you treat the indoor space. Clear it of any clutter and that way, you’re not falling over yourself when trying to move around the space. This is particularly important when you have young children but also when entertaining guests. You don’t want the outdoor space to look a mess and so try to keep it clutter-free.

Maintaining your outdoor space can take some effort but it’s definitely important to do more of where you can.

My Sunflower Seeds And Stubby Okras

PLUCKING MOMENTS....  Andy is back again, this time not to plant but to harvest. LOL... The sunflowers that he planted two months ago have reached their peak.  It is time to un-seed them and see if he could replant them again using the seeds.  Not sure it could work... the seeds are still drying under the sun during the day.
The sunflower turns into this....
And I didn't know they were actually sunflower seeds until we plucked them open...
Hope these can be replanted....

As for my own two pots of previous fat okras, they are slow in harvesting and so far, I have eaten only six of them.  Initially I did not know what type of species they were until this friend pointed out to me in Facebook, mentioning that.. if there are eight corners, then the okra is Arab species and if five corners, it is Taiwanese.  Thanks to her, now I know....  LOL... Interesting, right?
Still Sprouting high....
So now I know...
Mine are Arab ones, short and stubby and yet crunchy!
I am going to plant more pots of these...
They can either be steamed or stir fry with sambal!

Home Gardening Sunflowers For The First Time

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY.... I think... this is the first time I post up a flower post!

I am not into plants but I do like to plant vegetables though.  Recently, my neighbour gave me some okra seeds to plant and currently, they are still growing in my two pots in front of my house.  That is all I have, two pots of okra and they are still in their "baby" form.  I will show it when they have fully grown, not now... keeping my fingers crossed...LOL....

In this post, I want to share my son's plant, he bought some sunflower seeds online and last month, the package came.  Inside the big package, there are one packet of sunflower seeds, 12 small pots and 4 bigger pots plus a packet of soil.  This is the first time I see my son doing his own "germination" and in weeks to follow, the seeds grew and for the past week, the flowers began blooming!  We were so delighted... LOL... First time in history, we planted something and they bloomed so nicely.  Of course, my neighbour assisted us cos he has green fingers unlike us.  LOL...

We did an experiment while planting these sunflower.... we planted some behind our house and two pots in front.  Same timing but the difference is a lot.  While the back sunflowers bloom and bloom, the ones in front was just starting to bud.  Needless to say, the stems were different too... those planted behind were "fatter" than those planted in front of my house, they looked "malnourished!"

Budding....
Going to bloom....
Bloomed... so beautifully....
Maybe behind the house has more sunlight....
And standing tall too... 1 meter in height...
After a week... it started to wither...
The head looks larger in size....
And here is my malnourished sunflower in front of my house....
It started blooming while the ones at the back started to wither....
And it is not as tall as the back ones....
Anyway...
While one retires, one starts to live...
at least for a week!

A Walk At Duthie Park Winter Garden, Aberdeen

FLOWERS LOVER...

Definitely not me, I mean I am not one who knows about gardening, flowers or planting.  I only see and admire them... "ooohh... ahhhh... "  That's me... but not one who have knowledge like my friend, Florence has.  She knows almost everything in this Winter Garden, she gave me a guided tour, what these flowers are called, the leaves that lives on air... etc. etc... oh dear, now I forget almost everything already!

Alright, what was I babbling about?  Well, one fine morning or was it noon... despite of her daily busyness, Mary took us to David Welch Winter Gardens at Duthie Park, it is one of Europe's largest indoor gardens and Scotland's third most visited gardens.  It boasts a beautiful floral paradise all year round, with many rare and exotic plants on show from all around the world.  Entrance is free and my friend, Florence was the happiest lady the moment she entered into the Gardens!  LOL...
I only know know to get my photos taken only...
When it comes to names, this student failed terribly....

I don't know what these flowers are called... not even one of them...
Florence, I am so sorry, my memory is really bad!
I only know they are simply fascinating and beautiful...
Duthie Park Winter Garden is worth making a visit to!

Would You Like to Enjoy Your Garden In the Cold Months? Here's How to Make It More Livable

We all love the garden in the summer, but it can look miserable and lonely once the cold weather strikes and we no longer feel like getting out there. If you would like to make your outdoor space look as amazing during the cold months as it did in the summer, you might want to be creative and feed the plants, cover the roots, and make them look their best come rain or shine. Below you will find a few tips on how to make the most out of your outdoor scenery when you are curled up on the sofa or how to spend more time in the fresh air despite the colder temperatures outside.

Take Care of Dry Plants

The first thing you will have to take care of is the dry plants and the trees, bushes. You must remove the dead branches and cut down the different plants to the root, so they can preserve their energy and start blooming as soon as the spring arrives. The dry plants and shrubs will only destroy your garden landscape. Make sure that you get a professional landscape designer who will be able to determine which varieties are perennials, and which need to be removed completely from the flowerbeds.

Cut Back Everything

You will need to prepare your garden for the fall and the winter, too. This means feeding your soil and your grass. Get in touch with ABC Lawn Care to get help with dealing with the patches, removing the dry grass, loosening up the soil, and killing the moss and weed without damaging your lawn. This might also be the right time to deal with your borders and creating a stone structure or a low wall, fence that defines the different separate spaces and flower beds in your garden.

Cover Your Patio

In case you enjoyed the summer on your patio, you might wish you had the same space for entertaining your friends or sharing intimate moments. The good news is that you can still enjoy the patio if you create a cover and shelter that will protect you from the elements of the nature. While it might not be pleasant to sit outside on cold winter nights, you can still have your morning coffee and even lunch outside on warm, sunny days,

Create a Heated Shelter

It might also be a good idea to take care of the heating in your patio, or creating a garden shelter made of bamboo or other materials that will keep you warm in the winter. There are several great portable heating solutions that will quickly get you warm in  a small space. You will, however, need to make sure that you are not allowing the heat to escape through the gaps, and take care of the insulation. There are some great contemporary gazebos you can erect for the winter and fold up when the weather turns warm again.

Get a Garden House

In case you would like to enjoy the garden all year round, you might want to get a garden room erected that has loads of glass surface to allow you to see nature around you, but also comes with insulation. You can get various designs of this structure, and some of them come with double glazing and extra insulation on the roof and wall panels, Just imagine escaping into this room for a night away from chores and curling up with a book next to the portable heater, watching the sun set.

Create Holiday Themes

Once the Halloween and Thanksgiving arrive, as well as Christmas, you can start decorating your front and back yards in the adequate themes. The good news is that you will be able to use your garden as a blank canvas, and add light-up decorations that will be a pleasure to look at from the warmth of your home. Make your friends and neighbors envious by creating the best holiday themes possible.

Help the Wildlife

One of the things you can try this fall and winter to engage better with the wildlife is creating shelters for birds and small animals. Look at your local wildlife charity’s website for tips on how to help various small animals create a burrow and survive the winter. You might want to keep your garden safe from predators and keep an eye on the area. You can set up small cameras around the garden, so you can find out which species have chosen to survive the cold weather in your garden. Leave the wines and shrubs untouched, if you would like to create a winter paradise for wildlife.

Plant Berry Bushes

Birds that spend the winter in your garden will appreciate the berries left on the bushes and shrubs. While generally you might want to cut these plants back, you will also want to provide food for the wildlife. If you have a couple of strawberry bushes, a spicebush, or cedar trees, leave the seeds on for the birds to eat during the winter. You can spend a lot of time watching American robins if you leave the leaf litter on the ground, create sheltered alcoves, window ledges.

Bird Feeders

You will also have to take care of the wildlife by providing them with food and water. While it is more than likely that you will attract other species as well as birds, such as squirrels, you can make your feeder less accessible for unwanted animals, Design a bird feeder that has a very small entrance or has a grille, so it can be only accessed by small beaks. You might also want to provide a water fountain that provides animals with fresh drinking water when most of the other sources are frozen during the cold winter months.

Plant Seedheads

To support small mammals living on the ground level, you might want to plant a few seedheads that will provide both food and protection for these species. You might want to plant these in the spring so they can grow into large bushes and provide cover and shelter for animals. You will not only provide a hiding place from predators and birds of prey, but also nutritious food and a new living environment that is insulated and suitable for nesting.

Trim Your Conifers

In case you would like to create an inviting and beautiful home exterior in the winter, you might want to shape your conifers in different ways. You can create a bear, a spiral, a candy cane, or any animal you want. Emphasize the outline of your creation at night by installing a solar string light and turn your front yard into a winter wonderland, There are plenty of designs available for solar string lights and decorative lanterns that will light up your exterior and make your visitors smile, too.

Decorate Your Trees

Christmas and the New Year should not end in the house. In fact, you can decorate your trees from the time the nights are getting longer and change the theme every week. You can use string lights and solar lamps that don’t require any wiring, and spot lights as well to highlight the best and most creative designs.

If you would like to make the most out of your outdoor space during the cold months, you have several options. Spend the nights and mornings bird watching, look after the wildlife in your garden, decorate your shrubs and your trees, and create winter themes to impress your visitors and your neighbors.

Looking Green At Lowes

HOME FOR THE GREENS...

I am no green finger but I think I have been to nurseries here in Sacramento more than in my own hometown, Ipoh.  Since we have lots to plant and grow here in this fertile state, the only store which supplies everything about gardening and home, Lowe's is the place to go.  Lowe's for pro-s... but I am no pro... I just go there to take pictures!  LOL... And of course, to admire the plants and to know more about the home improvement appliances.  There are so much stuff which I do not know about for our own homes.  I wish I could buy and carry some home but it is just impossible.  So... the only thing I could do is to visit the store every now and then, and of course, to help carry around pushing the trolley and loading them into the van.  LOL...

After all the poses, it is time to carry our few hundreds bucks of stuff home...
That is the "heavy part!"
LOL...
