Shoes as your Child Grows

As your child develops, the need for shoes becomes more critical. You don’t just need shoes, you need the right shoes. They need to be roomy enough for your child to wiggle his toes, but not so loose that he trips over his own feet.

As he starts to walk, he won’t be steady on his feet. The right shoes can help this, but the wrong shoes will inhibit his ability to walk. The more he falls, the more he’ll lose confidence in his ability to walk on his own.

The more frustrated he gets with his shoes, the less he’ll want to wear them, making it a daily struggle for you to put them on. Keep shoes off of his feet as much as you can to enable him to grow and learn specially as your kids start school.

When the need for shoes arises, there are a lot of reputable brands with shoes to fit every kind of foot. Stride Rite and Bobux kids shoes have both been around for decades and have done the research needed to know exactly how to foster growth in the feet while still protecting them.

Unfortunately, these shoes won’t cut it as your child grows into the adolescent and teenage years. You’ll have to find other brands that can continue to protect your child’s feet and foster the growth they need throughout their childhood and puberty.

You need to pay close attention to growth spurts and other factors that could influence the need for new shoes. Find a local store that can help measure your child’s feet and put them in the right pair of shoes for their size, shape, and gait.

It’s important that your child be comfortable or their feet won't’ develop right, leading to more problems later on. Especially if your child plays a sport, their feet need to be protected in a way that doesn’t cause long term damage to the bone structure or integrity of the feet that will carry them throughout the rest of their life.

3 Easy Ways Parents Can Keep Their Kitchen Organized

When you became a parent, you probably didn’t anticipate all of the baby supplies that would eventually take over your kitchen. From bottles, to dishes, to a baby food maker, you may be wondering whether you will ever have an organized kitchen again. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways you can keep your kitchen in control while still utilizing all of your best baby feeding supplies. Here’s how:

1. Designate Space

If you keep your baby supplies with all of your other kitchen items, they’ll likely get lost or be difficult to find. Instead, clear out one drawer or cabinet (or more, since you’ll need it) and dedicate it only to your little one’s supplies. That way, when you’re rushing to find a clean bottle for your crying baby, you’ll know exactly where to go.

2. Put Items Away

It can be tempting to leave everything out on your tables or countertops because you know you’re likely just minutes away from a hungry child again. However, this method can quickly lead to a cluttered kitchen and a stressed out parent. Instead, put supplies away when not in use, such as formula, sippy cups or a blender for making baby food.

3. Organize and Group

Go through all of your baby supplies and group similar items together. You might dedicate a cupboard to dishes and cups and another to baby food or formula. If you don’t have enough cupboard or drawer space, you can put storage bins on your pantry shelves and label them according to what’s inside so you can quickly grab what you need.

If you feel like you’re drowning in baby supplies, you’re not alone. Babies cry for a reason, only adults do not know why at times they do, and one-that helps the baby to relax is to get the best anti-fatigue mat in the house.  But with a few changes here and there, you can quickly get your kitchen back in shape. How To Establish A Bedtime Routine For Your Toddler

All children need a good night’s sleep. Being overly tired is detrimental to their growth, health, learning and relationships. How do you establish a healthy bedtime routine without it becoming a battleground? This is a problem that most parents are familiar with.

Be Consistent

Consistency is important. Build a routine for your children and stick to it. Make sure their kindergarten or school bags are packed early in the evening. Start their bedtime routine at the same time each day. As part of their development, toddlers will try to push the boundaries. However, it is important that you remain firm. Be calm and gentle but be strict about their bedtime. Ultimately they will feel safer knowing their limits and that you are in control.

Allow Them To Wind Down

About an hour before their bedtime routine, encourage quieter activities. Foster a calm, peaceful atmosphere and allow them to wind down naturally. If they’re still excited and active, draw their attention to different activities such as reading, coloring or a puzzle. Speak quietly to reiterate that this is ‘quiet time’.

Issue Reminders

During this period of ‘quiet play’ remind them that bedtime is in half an hour, so they know what to expect. Remind them again when they have five minutes left. As part of their daily routine, help them to put away their toys. Praise them when they do this by themselves.

Work Through The Routine

When it’s time for bed, remind them gently and start to work through their routine. Run a bath or add some water to the sink for washing. Remind them at each stage what is coming next. In five minutes we’re going to brush your teeth and comb your hair. In a minute, we’re going to put on your panda pyjamas and read a story. Involve them in the process by asking what story they prefer. Or perhaps, which pyjamas they would like to wear.

Create A Calm And Safe Environment

Create a calm and peaceful bedroom for your child. Try to make it a fun place where they like to spend time. Check out these beautiful toddler beds from Cuckooland.com.

Dim the lights if possible. If your child is afraid of the dark, then opt for a nightlight or keep the landing light on. Read our article on how to help your kids love their bedrooms.

When your child is in bed, continue with their routine. You could read to them or talk to them about their day. Remind them how much time they have for stories before they must go to sleep. Encourage them to close their eyes as you’re reading.

Children of Different Ages

If you have children of different ages, try to stagger their bedtimes. This will allow you to spend some personal time with each of them. Go through a similar routine with each child and adapt it as they get older.

Bedtimes will always be tricky and children will make their objections known. Remaining calm and firm and being consistent will help them adjust. As they become used to the routine, their objections will decrease.

Preparing Your Child For Senior School

Senior schools tend to be a different animal to their junior counterparts. For one, the kids in the sixth form look like fully fledged adults to those entering at age 11. 11-year-olds go from being the biggest kids on the block, right down to the smallest again overnight.
But senior school also offers significantly greater challenges, both socially and intellectually. And it can all add up to make for a daunting experience.

Preparing For The First Day
Many children will find that they suffer from nerves the night before or the morning of the first day in a new school. This is understandable. They're going into an environment that is potentially dangerous. And in most schools they're likely to encounter some form of bullying or intimidation.
It's important to be honest with your child about the type of environment they can expect. Yes, it's true that everyone is in the same boat. But take seriously the legitimate concerns of your child. Schools aren't there to make children happy. They are there to ensure that teachers get paid. As a result, it's only a minority of teachers that take bullying seriously.
One of the best ways to resolve any issues like this is to talk through your experience of your first day in senior school. It's highly likely that you made friends almost straight away and that by the end of the first day there were people that you could relate to. Remind them that they don't have to stick with the people they first meet. In fact, spreading their wings a little and getting to know a group of people will likely inoculate them against attack.
Sports Kit
Things have changed a little in the world of school sports since many of us were at school. And so too have the kit requirements. Games like hockey and rugby 7s have become a lot more popular and a lot more safety conscious.
Nothing is worse for kids than not fitting in with their peers. And making sure that they have the right kit is part of that. Rugby 7s kits, as well as hockey kits, including faceguards, can be picked up online.
Homework
Preparing children for the extra burden that school places on them is a challenge. There's very little evidence that homework actually improves academic performance. And yet, schools continue to pile on more work for children in the evenings and on the weekends. This is even when children ought to have time to play, relax and consolidate the week's learning.
Most children do the natural thing and rebel against the additional work. It seems so unfair, especially because no other member of society would be expected to work a full day in the office and then take their work home with them.
One way to ease the process is to make a diary of all the work that needs to be done during the week and help your child plan out their homework timetable. With a bit of luck, they'll be able to do the work in no time, and you can then enjoy spending a bit of time with them on the weekend and in the evenings.

How to Protect Your Family For the Future Right Now

When you’re a parent, it goes without saying you do everything within your power to keep your family safe and well. We’re always looking for ways to improve our lives and make things more comfortable for the ones we love. Planning for as many eventualities as possible, we work hard to maintain our family's wellbeing.
The last few years have seen a rise in catastrophic weather conditions all over the world. These freak weather outbursts are often attributed to the effects of global warming, but we just can’t be sure. Whatever is causing these wild storms, hurricanes and earthquakes, it’s something we now all have to guard against. Your home is at risk from adverse weather. Even if you think there’s little risk of you being affected, there’s still a potential danger to you and your family. Weatherproof your home. Make sure you have an emergency kit of candles, torches and blankets should you lose power.

Working is essential for earning an income, self-esteem and setting an example for your children. Jobs are needed to maintain a regular paycheck! What would happen if your company folded suddenly? What if you were made redundant? It does happen, no matter how secure you think your job may be.  It can happen to anyone when they least expect it. So what would you do? Have you a reserve of funds just in case? If not, it’s time to start saving. You may not be able to put much away, after all, money is tight for just about everyone just now. However aside, much cash you can put it soon adds up. A small contingency fund is better than nothing at all. There are savings accounts that pay higher rates of interest if you withdraw if you leave them alone. Check out HSBC’s Serious Saver Account which pays up to 2.10% pa interest a year, depending on how often you dip into your rainy-day fund.

You go to they gym; you look after yourself. You’re not going to get sick! Sadly, ill health can hit any of us at any time. It’s not always something we like to think about. But as responsible adults, we have to try and think about everything that could potentially affect our families. From a burst appendix to a terminal disease, fate can deal us a cruel hand. How would you cope with the loss of income? Would you be able to afford transport to appointments, hospital visits, or even manage to pay the rent? The simplest way to cover yourself for potential problems caused by ill health is to take out a medical insurance plan. Critical illness cover may not be included in many standard health cover plans, so it pays to check your existing policy if you have one. If you’re not covered, there are different plans to suit your individual needs. A good place to start is NobleOak's Trauma Insurance Policy. It includes protection for most people's general needs.

Fires and Floods
When you have a fire or flood (that’s not weather related), it can be devastating. Something as every day as a burst pipe could flood your home, or a faulty electrical appliance could cause a fire. It’s something we never think will happen to us, but that’s a mindset we have to get out of. What would you do if this happened to you? It pays to have necessary safety routines in place. Work out routes to escape if you did have a house fire. Teach your children about fire safety and what to do in a fire. Practice a fire drill.
Have electrical appliances tested yearly and visually inspect them regularly to make sure they are safe. Switch electrical goods off when you aren’t using them. Inspect your plumbing regularly. Make sure pipes are well insulated against cold weather and make sure they don’t freeze in winter. You also need to make sure you have buildings and content insurance. This is a legal requirement if you have a mortgage. Moneybuddy has a useful guide to Mortgage Insurance where you can find out more.

We all hope for a happy and healthy future. By taking steps to help deal with any potential problems, you’ll be able to have peace of mind.

Pak Sook Koong With Noodles

Pity my poor girl... been eating hostel food all these while except for weekends or when she comes home. That is why whenever she is home, I will try to take her to whatever she wants to eat ... and that includes the frequent Japanese food...they are her favourite....

Other than the sashimi, sushi or whatever "shi" in the Japanese menu, the other protein she likes to take is FISH.. and not just any fish but Steamed Fish...  and this was how I did it last Sunday....
I bought a Pak Sok Koong (Ikan Baung) in Canning Garden market..
It was still swimming in the tank...
...but it wasn't when I collected it from the fish monger after 10 min.
Cost only RM15...
Easily charged RM40-50 if taken in restaurants...
then I blanched a plate of greens to go along with the steamed fish...
my girl wanted Korean noodles instead of rice....
and so be it....

Have you ever eaten steamed fish and vegetables
with a big bowl of noodles?
That's about it...
For this meal of RM20, it is indeed satisfying...
I think I will do this whenever possible...
At least she has some proteins to take back to the hostel..
LOL...

Sushi Zento In Festival Walk @ Ipoh

"Don't tell me that you want Japanese food for dinner again?"   She gave me a big grin and that meant a Big Yes!  Oh...oh...

I think both of us have tried all the Japanese restaurants in Ipoh by now already... Even the latest one called Sushi Zento did not escape her knowledge.  She told me that this Zento is now in Ipoh, having a promotion of 20% for all belt sushi... (meaning those that moves along the "track")

And so...here we are... at Sushi Zento to join in the crowd ....
A new outlet is born.... easy parking and easy to locate...
 Sushi flowing along the belt...
 The prices are quite reasonable....
2 pieces of salmon cost RM3.80 and my girl kept 4 pieces of that...
the rest we shared...
 Shake Tataki Roll...
I prefer my salmon pan fried a bit...

 I ordered a Sweet 16 drink...
Fresh strawberries and fresh pineapple...
And the bill came to an enormous RM76.60!
Well, this is not the end...
She told me that she wanted to come by again in two weeks time...
and that means I will have to eat porridge for the next two weeks!
LOL...

Parenting And Firefly

As a mother with three grown up kids, I have been waving "bye-bye" to my kids' every now and then especially during weekends. Once they reach eighteen, it is time to let them go in a way. No more staying at home with us 24/7, that only happens when they have their semester break in between and it does not happen much often.

So for parents with young kids, I'll say it again... do treasure the time now that they are here with you ... 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year... The house may be noisier and you might not be able to experience the Silence Is Golden atmosphere.... but once you do, you wish that the house will be "upside down" with noise and voices once again... LOL...
at the Ipoh airport again...
and now who is leaving...
both... the big and the small...
 but different routes only...
well, till we meet again....
thanks to Firefly, the journey only takes 1 hour or so...
but I hope their rates will be reduced one day...
and then perhaps Firefly will get more business from me!
LOL....

White Becomes Colourful...

For the past few months, I did not have a helper... I did my own washing and ironing... And the disastrous results came out such as these.... my girl's school shirts are gone for good.....

Instead of white school shirts, she now has 3 different colours....
BLUISH... REDDISH.... BROWNISH!!

Poor girl, I have to buy some new shirts for her...
at least to last her for another two months.... sigh...
What a mother!

Patience is Love..

Last night during church sermon, I felt it! The sermon that Pastor gave had a great impact on me. I felt really guilty, if pastor were to ask who was the guilty one, I would have stood up.... thank God, he didn't. The whole night he was talking all about me, the guilty one, indirectly. Funny how God speaks through another person. He was like speaking to me.... and the subject is Patience....

I have been pretty impatient for the last few days and thus the mood swings. Pastor mentioned these.. A patient person will bring the Best out of himself and an impatient person will bring the Beast out of him.. This is pretty true, when I am impatient, my ugliness shows.

When we are patient with ourselves, we have hope..
When we are patient with others, we have love...
When we are patient with God, we have faith..

I must learn to be patient...

Let's Start Grilling...

We were invited to a barbecue dinner last week, yes, despite the hot hot weather, we still had the mood to burn and grill. But in the midst of it, I went to hospital to get some cream and antibiotics for my "boil" on my palm. Ok, that is another story (not important)... I was not around to see what how they barbecued but they enjoyed it very much, as they told me later, thanks to the photographer who took these pictures for me ...

oooo..so hot...
but no one was complaining...
"come on, bro, open your mouth... let me feed u."

7 Or 8 Apples On Sunday

Fernie has been reminding me for many days but this old mum here purposely kept forgetting....
What was it? Apple sweet syrup... tong sui.. By the way, what is the proper word for "tong sui" in english? Direct translation is "sugar water." Sounds odd, huh....

Ok, back to the apple tong sui, I bought 10 apples but cut up eight... ehhh... picture showing 7 geh?? I remember putting cutting up eight ?... WTH, anyway... 7 or 8, they are easy to boil... just peel off the skin and cut them up, doesn't matter how big or small, the size doesn't matter. Some of them were cut up in halves and some in quarters.. That is Me... (always killing the recipe)

then just throw them into the pot
with some red dates
I love red dates so I put in more...

not forgetting rock sugar as well....

after 2 hours, we have our apple tong sui here...
sweet and sourish at the same time..
Best after eating something heaty such as durians!

Choc Chips Walnuts Cookies

I'm late tonight...really late... its 11pm already... a very busy day indeed. How I wish I am at least 10 years younger, ok ok... at least 5 years younger, can ah... then I won't tire so easily.

Ok, my busy schedule started after work at 5pm.. rushed home to change into my attire for my badminton appointment. (sorry kids, monday is mum's off day from the kitchen, just go do your own cooking, OK?) No la, I am not so bad a-mother-one... got tar-pau curry fish from the canteen... LOL.. (still bad, huh?)

Anywaysss.. back from badminton around 7.15pm... Girlie said, "Mi, lets make some cookies!" HUH? At this time of the night? My body still on the cooling down mode... but seeing her anticipated face, I don't have the heart to say NO... "Ok, ok... but promise you help me till the end, DEAL?"

So.... after my shower, body clean clean, we went to the kitchen, butter was still hard but then, who cares... just do it quick and as Frank Sinatra said, "Do It My Way" (elin, don't laugh!)

My way... yeah... All who see this, please don't laugh, OK (but u can snicker, though :) )

The making of an amateurish cookie maker...
